Summary

Cigarette smoking and other tobacco use kills approximately 5 million people worldwide annually, with this number expected to increase to 10 million by 2030, mostly in low- and middle-income countries. Effective interventions to reduce tobacco use include tax increases, dissemination of health risk information, restrictions on smoking in public places, comprehensive bans on advertising, and increased access to cessation therapies. Despite evidence of their effectiveness, tobacco control policies have been unevenly applied due to political constraints. Approximately 1.1 billion people smoked worldwide in 2000, with 82% residing in low- and middle-income countries, and smoking prevalence is significantly higher among men in these countries. Half of all long-term regular smokers are killed by their addiction, with half of these deaths occurring during productive middle age.
