Summary

A national survey of adults 45+ found that 35% of respondents were lonely, with age, income, and marital status significantly related to loneliness. Older adults and those with higher incomes reported lower rates of loneliness, while married respondents were least likely to be lonely and never-married respondents were most likely. Perceived lack of social support and a shrinking network of friends were associated with loneliness, and lonely respondents were less likely to engage in activities that build social networks. The study also found that loneliness was a significant predictor of poor health, and that significant predictors of loneliness included younger age, poor health, less frequent sexual intercourse, being unmarried, and getting little sleep.
