Summary

Ireland's 2019 renewable energy report shows the country is not on track to meet its 2020 renewable energy targets, with an overall renewable energy supply of 10.6% of gross final consumption in 2017, below the 16% EU target. Renewable energy displaced 1.8 Mtoe of fossil fuel consumption and avoided 4.2 MtCO2 of greenhouse gas emissions in 2017. The share of renewable electricity was 30.1%, renewable transport energy was 7.4%, and renewable heat was 6.9%. Wind generated 25% of all electricity in 2017, and the use of renewable energy in heat and transport is increasing, but Ireland ranks low in EU comparisons for overall renewable energy share and progress towards targets.
