Summary

Women face significant challenges as they age, with longer life spans and higher rates of disability and chronic health problems than men, resulting in a greater need for long-term services and supports (LTSS). Nearly two-thirds of Americans ages 85 and older are women, and women are more likely to need help with daily activities such as eating, bathing, and dressing. The cost of LTSS can be costly, with the typical annual cost of a private room in a nursing home being around $92,000, and many older women cannot afford to pay for these services due to low income and limited assets. Women are also the primary providers of LTSS, with six out of 10 family caregivers being women, and the direct care workforce being overwhelmingly female, with about 88% of home health and personal care aides, and about 90% of nursing home aides, being women.
