Summary

Russian law requires companies to "localise" personal data of Russian citizens by storing it in databases located in Russia. This means that initial collection, recording, systematisation, accumulation, storage, and updates of personal data must be done using databases in Russia. However, personal data can be transferred abroad after initial collection and updates in Russia, subject to cross-border data transfer requirements. Limitations apply only to database locations, not information systems, which can be located outside Russia. Non-compliance may result in penalties, including restricting access to a company's information system from Russia.
