Summary

Open population mark-recapture estimation of ocean-type Chinook salmon spawning escapements at stopover sites on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The report summarizes six annual mark-recapture experiments to estimate the escapement of Chinook salmon to the Burman River from 2009-2014 and the Conuma River in 2014. Gross escapements ranged from 1,784 to 7,543 at the Burman River and were 12,125 at Conuma River in 2014. Net population sizes reflect pre-spawning losses, averaging 20% at the Burman River and 23% at the Conuma River. Estimated abundance of natural origin Chinook salmon recruits at the Burman River ranged from 41 to 259 and averaged 182 from 2009-2014. Natural Chinook salmon in the Burman River did not reach the lower bound of the theoretical number of spawners required for maximum sustained yield.
