Summary

A Voluntary Human Approach Test (VHAT) was performed on 1668 pens in 214 commercial pig fattening farms in Germany to investigate relationships between environmental conditions and welfare indicators. The test measured time until first contact, time until surrounded by pigs, percentage of pigs surrounding the observer, and contact type. Results showed that pigs with more forceful contact approached faster, and a lower time until first contact was associated with more manipulatable materials, drinkers, and caretaker presence. Group size and age also impacted test outcomes, with larger groups and younger pigs showing different behaviors. The study concluded that the VHAT can be a valid animal welfare indicator, but only if environmental and management factors are considered.
