Summary

Aristolochic acids were tested for antitumor effects in the 1960s and found to be nephrotoxic. In the 1980s, they were shown to have carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. In 1993, over 100 cases of irreversible nephropathy were reported in a Belgian slimming clinic that used Chinese herbs mixed with pharmaceutical preparations. Aristolochic acids were banned in 1999. A woman, Patricia Booth, took Long Dan Xie Gan Wan for 5.5 years and developed renal failure and urothelial carcinoma. The herbal formula contained Mu Tong Aristolochia manshurensis, which contains aristolochic acids. The case led to a court verdict and highlighted the need for regulation of the profession. The safety of Chinese herbal medicine is often unfairly reported in the media and medical journals, and there is a need for a balanced and less biased assessment of the contrasting evaluations in scientific, medical, and Chinese medicine journals and literature.
