The World Conservation Congress recognizes the importance of peatlands, which cover 3% of the Earth's land surface and store more carbon than all the world's vegetation, and calls for action to protect and restore them due to rapid loss through fires, conversion for agriculture, and mining, which releases large amounts of carbon and harms biodiversity and water systems.
