Summary

Researchers from TU Delft, the European Space Agency, and MIT conducted an experiment on the International Space Station (ISS) using the MIT/NASA SPHERES VERTIGO satellite, which is equipped with a stereo vision system. The experiment, performed on October 8th, 2015, aimed to gather data and navigate using stereo vision, and also to test a novel Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) setup that allows the robot to learn monocular distance estimation. The SSL method uses a trusted sensor cue to train a secondary sensor cue, and the experiment demonstrated the first online learning robotic experiment in space. The results show that the robot successfully gathered data and navigated using stereo vision, and also learned to estimate distances using a single camera. This technology has the potential to enable future space robots to continuously improve their navigation capabilities over time, even in harsh and unknown environments.
