Signs and symptoms of EVD include fever, severe headache, muscle pain, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and unexplained hemorrhage.
If a patient has these symptoms and has traveled outside the US in the last 30 days, especially to Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, or Mali, EMS personnel should:
- Limit crew members involved in patient care
- Wear full PPE, including double gloves, gown, head cover, N95/P100 mask, face shield, and leg/shoe covers
- Place a surgical mask on the patient
- Keep the patient separated from others
- Notify the receiving Emergency Department Charge Nurse of a potential Ebola patient
- Avoid invasive procedures
- Use disposable equipment
- Follow proper decontamination and reporting procedures after patient care.
