SPHERE (Spectro-Polarimetric High Contrast Exoplanet Research) is an instrument aiming for direct detection of extra-solar planets, with ZIMPOL (Zurich Imaging Polarimeter) as its high contrast imaging polarimeter subsystem. The fully integrated SPHERE-ZIMPOL system has been tested, yielding the first high contrast polarimetric results. The system utilizes extreme Adaptive Optics, Coronagraphy, and Polarimetry to achieve high contrast, with the goal of detecting reflected light from extra-solar planets. The visual-red spectral region is well-suited for planet polarimetry due to polarization from Rayleigh scattering and haze particles in planetary atmospheres. The system's performance is crucial for detecting planets with orbital periods of a few months to years, particularly those in or near the habitable zone.
