On January 12, 2018, a Piper Aztec aircraft experienced a right engine failure while enroute from Chub Cay Airport to Grand Bahama International Airport, resulting in a controlled landing in a mangrove area near Great Harbour Cay Airport. The pilot, who had an expired medical certificate, and the aircraft received minor damages. The Air Accident Investigation Department recommended that the Bahamas Civil Aviation Authority investigate the accident from a regulatory angle, as the aircraft was flown with an expired registration certificate. The BCAA responded with several measures, including heightened surveillance activities, joint operations with the Federal Aviation Administration, and the development of an interim law test for new and existing license holders. The safety recommendation was closed as "Exceeds Recommended Action" on July 27, 2018.
