Summary

Adequate food and nutrition are threatened by governments subsidizing low-quality "junk" food, leading to health issues like obesity and chronic diseases. Ultra-processed products are linked to intellectual and emotional disability, and agricultural workers are exposed to toxic substances. The lack of regulation enables corporations to undermine the right to know what is in food. Peoples' sovereignty over food systems and natural resources is compromised by corporate takeovers, financialization, and commodification of resources. Transnational companies monopolize food governance, and governments have relinquished authority to regulate them. FIAN International opposes financialization, the dismantling of democracy and human rights, and environmental destruction caused by extractive activities, industrial agriculture, and pollution, which compromise the right to adequate food and nutrition.
