Summary

Applications on modern supercomputers are limited by data movement costs, but programming systems lack abstractions for describing data structure, placing the burden of data management on programmers. The authors propose "structure slicing", an extension to the Legion programming system, which incorporates fields into logical regions, enabling automatic inference of task parallelism, decoupling of data usage from layout, and reduced data movement. Structure slicing allows computations to explicitly slice logical regions to name subsets of fields, deriving performance benefits such as task parallelism, decoupled data layout, and reduced data movement. The authors demonstrate the benefits of structure slicing with several applications, including S3D, a combustion simulation, achieving speedups of up to 3.68X over a vectorized CPU-only Fortran implementation and 1.88X over an independently hand-tuned OpenACC code.
