Summary

Recent work on the syntax-prosody interface has employed violable constraints within Optimality Theory (OT). An OT system consists of two functions, GEN and CON, but most research has focused on CON, with GEN receiving less attention due to the time-consuming process of manually generating candidates. To address this, the authors developed SPOT, a JavaScript application that automatically generates prosodic candidate sets and evaluates each constraint for each candidate. SPOT can be used to refine CON and demonstrate how small variations in constraint definitions can make significantly different predictions. The presentation introduces SPOT, demonstrates its utility in exhaustive candidate generation, rapid evaluation, theory comparison, and refinement of CON.
