Treblinka Extermination Camp was established in summer 1942 as part of Aktion Reinhard, with approximately 870,000 people murdered there. The camp was located near the train station of Malkinia, and the first transports arrived on July 23, 1942, including Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto. The mass extermination program was in operation until April 1943, with 738,000 Jews from the Generalgouvernement, 107,000 Jews from the Bialystok district, and 29,000 Jews from outside Poland murdered at Treblinka, as well as 2,000 Gypsies. The camp was run by SS-Obersturmfuehrer Franz Stangl and his deputy Kurt Franz, with 20-30 SS Officers and 90-120 Ukrainian soldiers working as camp guards. The extermination process involved deceiving victims into entering gas chambers, where they were killed with carbon monoxide. After the war, many SS officers who worked at Treblinka were put on trial, with both Stangl and Franz sentenced to life imprisonment.
