Summary

A study measured the prevalence and incidence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in children and school staff in Belgian primary and secondary schools between December 2020 and June 2021. The findings showed that 12.4% of pupils and 14.8% of school staff had anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, similar to the prevalence in the general population. Regional differences were observed, with Brussels having a higher prevalence among pupils and Flanders and Wallonia having similar prevalence among pupils and staff. The study found no evidence of important clustering of cases in schools, suggesting that schools did not result in disproportionate numbers of infected individuals and were not places where the coronavirus was more widespread or likely to spread than elsewhere in the community.
