Summary

The Social Enterprise Initiative (SEI) at Harvard Business School (HBS) was established 25 years ago, with the goal of inspiring leadership for good. The initiative was launched after John C. Whitehead (MBA 1947) wrote to Dean John H. McArthur, encouraging HBS to start a nonprofit management program, and offered a founding gift of $10 million. Since its inception, SEI has developed various programs, including the Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management executive education program, the Entrepreneurship in the Social Sector MBA elective course, and the Social Enterprise Conference. SEI's intellectual agenda has focused on understanding what it takes to achieve meaningful social change, and has developed frameworks such as the dual-purpose playbook, corporate citizenship, and impact investing. The initiative has also produced various cases, including the Aravind Eye Hospital case, which has sold nearly 100,000 copies. Today, SEI continues to shape the practice of managers seeking change for good across the globe.
