A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. The place where the river begins is called the source. As a river flows, it transports sediment, which it takes from the source and banks, depositing it at the mouth. Key terms include:
- Source: the point where a river starts
- Tributaries: smaller rivers or streams flowing into a larger river or lake
- Meander: the natural bend in a river
- Mouth: the place where a river ends and enters a lake, larger river, or the sea
- Delta: landform created by deposition of sediment that is carried by a river as the flow leaves its mouth and enters slower-moving or stagnant water
- Estuary: the tidal mouth of a large river, where the tide meets the stream
- River bed: the bottom of the river, normally the deepest part of the river and in the middle of 2 riverbanks
- Course: the channel that a flowing body of water follows, beginning high up in rapids, mountains and waterfalls, moving downwards to meanders and river cliffs, and finishing at the delta.
