Summary

Cyanobacteria can form harmful algal blooms (HABs) in warm water with abundant nutrients, negatively impacting ecosystems, human and animal health, and the economy. HABs can produce cyanotoxins, which can harm humans and animals if ingested through contaminated drinking water. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established 10-day Health Advisories for microcystins and cylindrospermopsin, with levels of 0.3 µg/L for children under 6 and 1.6 µg/L for adults and children over 6 for microcystins, and 0.7 µg/L for children under 6 and 3.0 µg/L for adults and children over 6 for cylindrospermopsin. Exceeding these levels can cause adverse health effects, including stomach problems, vomiting, diarrhea, and liver and kidney damage. The EPA recommends water systems take action if cyanotoxin levels exceed these advisories, and sensitive populations, such as pregnant women and nursing mothers, should follow the health advisories for infants and young children.
