Kanniyakumari District has a multi-disaster prone profile, with a 72 km coastline vulnerable to tsunamis, cyclones, and marine erosion. The district has experienced significant disasters, including the 2004 tsunami that claimed 800 lives and caused economic losses in crores. The government has implemented the Coastal Disaster Risk Reduction Programme (CDRRP) and Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) with World Bank support. The district is also prone to seasonal floods, particularly during the North-East retreating monsoon, which has caused loss of life and property in the past. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) was formed in 2014, and the District Disaster Management Plan (DDMP) 2015 was released, providing a clear roadmap for field operators. The plan has been updated in 2016 and 2017, incorporating new initiatives such as Hospital Disaster Management Plan and CBDRM project progress. The district has taken various measures to mitigate disasters, including training first emergency responders, planting saplings to reduce global warming, and implementing drought response measures.
