Summary

Barbilophozia barbata is a calcifuge or mild calcicole growing in dry to moist rocky habitats, with a range of 20-850m altitude. It was thought to be lost from Ireland since the 1970s but was rediscovered in 2013. The species is patchy and rare in Britain, with some evidence of decline in the Netherlands and North German Plain. It is dioicous, with rare male plants and no recorded sporophytes in Britain. The species has a circumpolar Boreal-montane distribution, found in northern Europe, Russia, China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, N America, Greenland, and Mexico.
