Summary

The authors consider subsequence versions of weighted ergodic theorems and show that for a wide class of subsequences, they have almost everywhere (a.e.) convergence for the subsequence Cesaro weighted averages when the weights are obtained from uniform sequences. They define "good universal" sequences, which have a.e. convergence of unweighted Cesaro averages, and "strongly good universal" sequences, which also have a strong type (p, p) maximal operator. The authors investigate the convergence of weighted averages along these sequences for various types of operators, including measure preserving transformations, Dunford-Schwartz operators, and positively dominated contractions. They introduce the concept of Besicovitch sequences and show that bounded Besicovitch sequences are good weight sequences along strongly good universal sequences for Dunford-Schwartz operators.
