Summary

Researchers developed a method to improve genome-wide association studies by leveraging insertions and deletions (INDELs) and integrating multiple types of variants. They found that 63% of INDELs in Arabidopsis thaliana and 64% in Drosophila melanogaster were misclassified, leading to inconsistent annotations. To address this, they created the software Irisas to reclassify and re-annotate these variants. Using Irisas, they re-analyzed two datasets and identified novel trait loci that previous SNP-based association studies missed, explaining an additional 11% and 3% of phenotypic variance in A. thaliana and D. melanogaster, respectively.
