Summary

The occurrence of rogue waves and their mechanisms are becoming clearer, but a full consensus on their probability of occurrence has not been achieved. Recognized mechanisms for rogue wave occurrence include linear Fourier superposition, wave-current interactions, crossing seas, quasi-resonance nonlinear interactions, and shallow water effects. The Benjamin-Feir Index (BFI) is a measure of nonlinearity and dispersion, and random waves are expected to become unstable when BFI=O(1). Research has shown that rogue-wave-prone sea states can occur in the North Atlantic more often than once in the 20/25-yr period, the current design return period for ship structures. The study investigates rogue-wave-prone crossing seas and their probabilities of occurrence in the ocean, using hindcast data from various locations. The coupled Nonlinear Schrödinger (CNLS) equations describe the stability of a system of two non-collinear wave trains, and a linear stability analysis indicates that growth rates of perturbations depend on the angle between the two wave systems. The research has implications for the design and operations of ship and offshore structures.
