Summary

Pierre René Rogue, a 38-year-old priest of the Congregation of the Mission, was martyred on March 3rd, 1796, in Vannes, Brittany, for refusing to accept the Civil Constitution of the Clergy imposed by the French Revolution. Born on June 11th, 1758, he was a former Diocesan Priest who joined the Congregation of the Mission in 1786 and worked in the seminary and parish of Le Mené. He took a strong stance against the Civil Constitution, considering it a threat to the Church's constitution and the Pope's authority. Despite the danger, he chose to remain in Vannes, guiding his brethren and comforting those persecuted, until his arrest on Christmas 1795. During his imprisonment, he showed remarkable faith, calmness, and good humor, and even forgave his betrayer, Le Muet, giving him his watch and asking his mother to help Le Muet's family. Pierre René's martyrdom is a testament to his unwavering loyalty to the Church and his commitment to his mission, demonstrating that mission has no limits and can lead to martyrdom, or "witness by one's life.
