Summary

Duplicate and fake publications in scientific literature are a growing concern, with two kinds of bibliographic tools used to retrieve and make publications available online. While free services like Google Scholar and DBLP can be easily interfered with, paid services like IEEE Xplore and Scopus are assumed to guarantee data integrity. However, duplicate and fake publications are appearing in scientific conferences and bibliographic services. A software method detects these problematic papers, and experiments on computer science texts identify bogus papers. The study uses text-mining tools and corpora of recent texts to detect duplicates and meaningless publications, finding that even reputable tools like Scopus and WoK are not immune to failures.
