Summary

Theo van Doesburg, a radical artist and editor of De Stijl, was influenced by Russian artists, including Alexandre Archipenko and El Lissitzky, in the 1920s. Archipenko's work, which Van Doesburg had admired since 1918, fell into his definition of "Cubist" and impacted his compositional method, known as "visual dialectic". Van Doesburg's principles of Neo-Plastic Art, published in 1919, involved cancelling out expressional means to create a pure artistic form. He was also influenced by Lissitzky's Proun, which refined his artistic and architectural development. Van Doesburg advocated for a "formless" architecture, free from traditional form and style, and produced a colour scheme for a housing project and school in Drachten, Netherlands, using primary and secondary colours to create movement.
