Summary

Researchers studied nanostructured porous silicon impregnated with a solid-state oxidizer to provide mechanical impulse for jet-propulsion microsystems. The system, consisting of a silicon chip attached to a carrying platform via an elastic spacer, was tested for impulse measurements. Results showed that the microsystem gained an impulse of up to 200-220 mN·s, with the elastic spacer promoting combustion and preventing explosion. The study demonstrated the potential of nanoporous silicon as an energy source for microthrusters, which could be used for primary propulsion and attitude control of microspacecraft and small satellites.
