The US audio news sector is split between traditional terrestrial radio and digital formats like online radio and podcasting. In 2016, 91% of Americans ages 12 or older listened to terrestrial radio in a given week, while 61% of Americans ages 12 or older have listened to online radio in the past month. News/talk/information is among the most listened-to radio formats, with 9.6% of radio listeners tuning in during any 15-minute period. Online radio listening in cars has increased, with 40% of US cellphone owners having ever listened to online radio in a car using a phone. The percentage of podcast listeners has substantially increased, with 40% of Americans ages 12 or older having ever listened to a podcast and 24% having listened in the past month. Average radio revenue remained steady in 2016, with all-news stations averaging $17.5 million per year and news/talk/info stations averaging $2.4 million per year. There were 29 all-news stations in the US as of 2017, down from 32 the previous year.
