Summary

Alabama has 388,850 small businesses, which account for 99.4% of all businesses in the state, employing 772,214 people (48.1% of the private workforce). The state's small businesses created 8,971 net new jobs in 2014, with firms employing 20-49 employees experiencing the largest gains. Minority-owned businesses totaled 92,183, and 80.9% of Alabama exporters were small firms, generating 20.4% of the state's total known exports. The unemployment rate was 5.9% in November 2016, down from 6.3% in 2015.
