Summary

University Museums Group (UMG) surveyed its members to understand the challenges and opportunities faced by university museums, galleries, and collections during the COVID-19 crisis. The report shows that visitor numbers have dropped to 25% of pre-pandemic levels, and income from various sources is expected to decrease. Staffing has been affected by furlough and recruitment freezes, and disruption to physical access has impacted conservation, building works, research, and teaching. However, the shift to digital has had positive effects on research and teaching, and public and community engagement. The report highlights the need for training and skills around digital literacy, access to funding and new income streams, and access to information about monetisation of digital assets. Respondents requested UMG's support in advocacy, positive messaging, and knowledge exchange.
