Summary

The University of Manitoba (UM) has been engaged in community consultations to develop a new strategic plan, with approximately 650 faculty, 560 staff, 70 students, and 70 others participating in 60 in-person and virtual sessions, and over 1,000 community members responding to surveys. The consultations revealed that UM has many components separated by geography, diverging expectations, and nuanced understandings of what the university is supposed to achieve. The community expressed a strong belief in the importance of community engagement, collaboration, and regional access and affordability. However, UM's ability to expand upon avenues for progress and innovation has been hindered by obstacles such as the decline of provincial public funding, global uncertainty, and a tightening labour market. The community identified five broad themes for the university to focus on: Anti-racism and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion; Reconciliation and Decolonization; a UM for Manitoba; Preparing Students for Tomorrow; and Creating Knowledge that Matters.
