BreaCan, a statewide information and support service for people affected by breast cancer and gynaecological cancers, has undergone significant change and growth over the past year. The service has expanded to provide information to women with gynaecological cancers, in addition to its existing support for breast cancer patients. Approximately 3,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and 1,000 with gynaecological cancer each year in the state. BreaCan's holistic approach recognizes the impact of cancer on all aspects of a person's life and provides supportive care, including practical, emotional, social, and financial support. The service is women-centered, with over 90% of users being women, and is located at the Queen Victoria Women's Centre in Melbourne. BreaCan offers one-on-one services, including centre-based support, telephone support, and email contact, as well as a library of resources and information sessions. The service is staffed by trained volunteers who have personally experienced breast cancer or cared for someone who has. Despite the challenges of transitioning to support women with gynaecological cancers, BreaCan's volunteers remain committed to making a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.
