Summary

Males comprise 80.4% of REIT board members, but the gap has narrowed by 210 basis points between 2018 and 2019. REIT boards are getting younger, with an average age of 58 for newly elected directors. Approximately 50.4% of newly elected non-employee/outside REIT directors are female, outpacing the broader public marketplace. Fewer REIT boards have no females, with 10% having exclusively male directors, compared to 16% of Russell 3000 companies. Larger companies have higher levels of gender diversification, with REITs over $15 billion in total capitalization having 23.5% female representation. Diversity beyond gender lags, with only 7.7% of new REIT director hires being minorities, less than half of the Russell 3000's 15.6%.
