Summary

The Next Level SOE project evaluated Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells (SOEC) technology for three industrial use cases: hydrogen production at OCI, syngas and green hydrogen production at BP, and carbon monoxide production at Air Liquide. The study found system efficiencies of 83% for hydrogen production, 82% for CO2 reduction, and 92% for syngas production. Upscaling potential is possible through increased current density, surface area, and module size, which could lead to substantial CAPEX and footprint reduction. The cost reduction potential is driven by technology improvements, higher current densities, and larger scale manufacturing. Total Investment Costs (TIC) are estimated to decrease from 4,800 €/kW in 2020 to 1,200 €/kW in 2030.
