Summary

Studies by Ernst & Young in 2013 and 2014 found that women executives who participated in sports were more likely to hold executive positions and believed that sports participation helped their career advancement by teaching teamwork, resilience, and a strong work ethic. Similar studies by Catalyst and Di Giorgio also found that women executives who participated in sports developed valuable skills such as leadership, discipline, and a competitive edge. Despite these findings, women remain underrepresented in leadership positions in the sports industry, with a 2011 Turnkey Sports Poll finding that only 49% of senior-level sports executives had reported to a female supervisor at some point in their careers. Longitudinal studies by the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport have also shown slow progress for women in professional sports leadership positions since the 1980s.
