The Sakata City economy is slowly recovering from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, although some industries remain severe. Personal consumption is still struggling, particularly in service consumption, and employment is slowly improving despite some weak areas.

Production is increasing in industries such as metal products and business machinery, with the mining and industrial production index rising for 7 consecutive months.

Construction is also showing signs of recovery, with new housing starts exceeding the previous year's level for the first time in 2 months, despite a decrease in condominiums. Public investment is decreasing nationwide, but Yamagata Prefecture is exceeding the previous year's level for the 2nd consecutive month.

Personal consumption remains weak, with department store and supermarket sales falling below the previous year's level for the 2nd consecutive month. New car registrations are also down, and employment is slowly improving, although some areas are still weak.

The number of corporate bankruptcies is stable, but the number of cases and total debt in Yamagata Prefecture are exceeding the previous year's level.
