Tomás O'Leary from the Passive House Academy built his home to Passivhaus standard in 2004, after being inspired by a Swedish architect's project. He had to convince his wife, who was initially skeptical, by taking her to see Passivhaus projects in Frankfurt and meeting Dr. Feist. With limited information available in English at the time, Tomás faced challenges, but received support from Sustainable Energy Ireland and the Passivhaus Institute. He learned key lessons from his project, including optimizing thermal bridges and detailing, and that thermal mass is less relevant in mild climates like Ireland. Tomás would do things differently if he were to build again, such as using timber frame instead of concrete and reducing glazing. He explains that thermal mass can be beneficial in hot climates to modulate temperature peaks and troughs, but is less important in mild climates where Passivhaus buildings maintain warm surfaces.
