Summary

Researchers investigated /l/ variation in English using forced alignment, analyzing a large speech corpus with automatically aligned phones. They found a correlation between rime duration and /l/-darkness for syllable-final /l/, but no correlation between /l/ duration and darkness for syllable-initial /l/. The data showed a clear difference between clear and dark /l/ in English, with syllable-final /l/ being less dark preceding an unstressed vowel than preceding a consonant or word boundary. A new method for measuring /l/-darkness through forced alignment was proposed and validated, using acoustic models trained on the data set. The study utilized the 2001 term of the SCOUS corpus, containing 21,706 tokens of /l/, and found that the forced alignment procedure can effectively classify /l/ as clear or dark.
