St Leonard's CE (A) First School has a Religious Education policy that aims to provide a full and positive presentation of living Christianity, while also teaching about other major religions and their impact on culture and society. The policy, adopted in January 2022, is based on the Church of England's "Understanding Christianity" resources and follows the legal requirements of the Education Reform Act (1988). The school dedicates at least 5% of curriculum time to RE, with at least two-thirds of the subject content focused on Christianity. The policy's aims and objectives include enabling pupils to encounter Christianity, learn about other religions, develop spiritual and philosophical convictions, and contribute to the development of pupils' own faith and beliefs. Pupils are expected to be able to compare and contrast different religions, express religious beliefs and ideas, and reflect on the decisions people make. The policy also recognizes the right of parents to withdraw their children from RE and collective worship.
