La problemàtica actual respecte a la contaminació i canvi climàtic ha fet que el medi ambient estigui en boca de tothom i ha augmentat la preocupació dels ciutadans per les possibles conseqüències que té un tractament nociu per al medi que ens envolta. L'Educació Ambiental és un procés que dura tota la vida i que té com a objectiu impartir consciència ambiental, coneixement ecològic, actituds i valors cap al medi ambient per prendre un compromís d'accions i responsabilitats que tinguin per fi l'ús racional dels recursos i poder aconseguir així un desenvolupament adequat i sostenible. Els objectius d'aquest tipus d'educació inclouen la presa de consciència, coneixements, actituds, aptituds, capacitat d'avaluació i participació. És important que l'educació s'iniciï el més aviat possible perquè els nens puguin identificar i solucionar problemes ambientals i desenvolupar hàbits sostenibles. Els objectius de l'Educació Ambiental per a nens inclouen conscienciar-los dels problemes ambientals, fomentar l'interès en la participació i millora del medi, desenvolupar la capacitat d'informar-se i ampliar els coneixements de l'entorn pròxim.
