Summary

James Kerr was named 2002-2003 State Teacher of the Year by State Superintendent Sandy Garrett. Kerr, an Eighth Grade Center science teacher, was chosen from 12 finalists and will represent Oklahoma in the National Teacher of the Year competition. He will also serve as the Oklahoma Ambassador of Teaching and receive awards including $7,000 in cash and prizes. Rhonda Friday, an art teacher at Moore Elementary, was named Oklahoma Elementary Art Educator of the Year. Union Public Schools collected $108,533 for the United Way campaign, and 50 employees volunteered with United Way agencies. The district is facing budget cuts, resulting in the loss of 28 teaching positions and 9 administrative/support positions, and increased class sizes. Despite challenges, the district has achieved successes, including 12 National Merit Semifinalists and 10 Commended Students, and the Renegade Regiment competing at nationals.
