Literacy Matters is a publication of Literacy Nassau, Inc. The issue features a tutor spotlight on Antonia "Nia" Obara, who has worked with various ELL programs. The organization is undergoing changes in its basic literacy program, including a 7-year transition to become an accredited affiliate of the Academy of Orton Gillingham Practitioners and Educators. The staff team is preparing for this transition, and Umama Pasha attended a Train-the-Trainer workshop to become a trainer through the Long Island Regional Adult Education Network. The organization is also celebrating its one-year anniversary of launching Next Chapter Book Clubs, which have been successful with over 15 clubs and 70 members. Additionally, the organization has introduced Jot It Down, a community-based creative writing club for adults with disabilities.
