Summary

The sustainable fashion tribe uses social media to inform and reach people about ethical and ecological fashion consumption, but their underlying motives may be altruistic or promote conspicuous consumption. A qualitative study of nine interviews found four main motives: altruistic, social, egoistic, and prestige-related. Although the tribe's principal values align with altruistic motives, the results also show signs of conspicuous consumption, as they want to gain reputation and recognition for promoting sustainable fashion. However, the study concludes that conspicuous consumption of sustainable fashion on social media can still promote sustainable consumption and have a positive effect on the environment.
