Summary

The University of California's Academic Council has expressed concerns about the use of Research Information Management Systems (RIMS) to assess faculty, citing issues with data quality, reliability, and transparency, as well as the encroachment of commercial systems into core university operations. A report by the University Committee on Academic Computing and Communications (UCACC) and the University Committee on Library and Scholarly Communication (UCOLASC) details these concerns and recommends a system-wide review of RIMS use. At least 16 RIMS are in use across UC campuses, but a comprehensive understanding of their use and contractual terms is lacking. The Academic Council has endorsed the report and its recommendations, and is seeking the system-wide administration's help in facilitating a more exhaustive inventory of RIMS and their uses.
