Summary

The past decade has seen significant development in pluralist theories of truth, with four main theories: strong alethic pluralism, alethic disjunctivism, second-order functionalism, and manifestation functionalism. Traditional views on truth combine monism and substantivism, but face opposition from deflationists and pluralists. Deflationists argue that truth has no deep underlying essence, while pluralists argue that no single property can cover all truth-apt discourse. The relationship between traditionalism, deflationism, and pluralism forms an inconsistent triad. Monists and pluralists can be further distinguished into stronger and weaker versions, with strong monism entailing moderate monism, but being incompatible with pluralism. Ultimately, it is argued that adherents of other pluralist views may struggle to reject the viability of some form of alethic disjunctivism.
