Summary

About 41% of US K-12 public school students are Black or Latino, but only 16% of teachers are Black or Latino. This disparity results in students missing out on academic and social-emotional benefits of a diverse teacher workforce. Increasing teacher diversity can promote positive models of leadership, improve classroom experiences, help close achievement gaps, and foster a positive school climate. To address the educator diversity gap, stakeholders can take actions such as expanding financial support for teacher candidates, reducing barriers to obtaining a teaching credential, and creating support networks for teachers of color. District and school leaders can create "grow-your-own" pathways, partner with teacher preparation programs, and identify and rectify racial bias in hiring practices. Community leaders can urge school and district leaders to take action and build momentum for change.
