A commentary on a philosophical treatise is successful if it demonstrates the treatise's richness in features characteristic of good philosophy, such as coherence, sound argument, and engagement with alternative views. In Sanskrit philosophical commentary, two notable aspects are the compactness of base texts and the nesting of commentaries. The commentarial pattern typically involves a sūtra, a bhāṣya, a vārttika, and higher-level commentarial works, which aim to unpack and weave together the text, defend particular constructions, and revise and adjust as necessary. The importance of commentary lies in its ability to enable readers to understand patterns of inter-relatedness within complex ideas, achieved through a two-step process of marking up thematically unified groupings and making contiguous groupings stand in causal or explanatory relationships. Every commentary engages in explaining individual expressions, aiming to clarify syntax and supply paraphrases, with the generic term vyākhyāna understood as stating the meaning of the root text using different words to prevent confused or contradictory opinions.
